How to Kill Bed Bugs

Updated: Feb 21, 2019

When living in a city where residents are often in close quarters, like Rockland County, it isn’t uncommon to have pest infestations in your home or apartment. Among the most common household pests are bed bugs–tiny pests about the size of a grain of rice that can wreak havoc in your home.

The last thing you want in your home is a bed bug infestation, as they can be hard to get rid of. Plus, they bite! While the bites aren’t contagious or dangerous, they do itch and ache and cause a good deal of discomfort.

If you’re looking to get rid of these tiny devils while waiting for your bed bug pest control service, you’re in luck. There are a few ways that you can kill bed bugs on your own.

Signs of a Bed Bug Infestation

Before you set out on a bed bug pest control quest, you’ll want to make sure that bed bugs are the real culprit. Because they’re so small and are good at hiding, they can be hard to spot with the naked eye, so watch for these signs of bed bugs if you’re getting suspicious that you have an infestation:

  • Tiny white eggs in the crevices of your mattress or furniture

  • Small blood spots from where they’ve been crushed

  • Shell casings

  • Pin-sized black spots on your mattress

  • Itchy or sore bites on your body, usually red in color

If you notice one or more of these signs of bed bugs in your home, make sure you call a bed bug pest control service right away.

Getting Rid of Bed Bugs

While they’re very difficult to get rid of and usually require a professional bed bug extermination service, there are a few things that you can do on your own to get rid of them.

  • Wash all infested linens at a high temperature. To completely kill bed bugs and bed bug eggs that are living in the fabric, they must be washed at a temperature of 117 degrees Fahrenheit.

  • Vacuum your mattress, furniture, and around your bed.

  • Cover your mattress with a plastic sheet to prevent them from coming or going.

  • If the infestation is bad, consider throwing away all infested clothes and bedding. It’s just not worth the risk!

Call a Bed Bug Extermination Service

Unfortunately, it’s very likely that the only way that you’ll be able to get rid of your bed bug problem is by calling a professional bed bug extermination service. These particular pests are hard to get rid of on your own, and when you use a professional pest control company, it’s less likely that they’ll come back to wreak havoc again.

Skilled Pest Control won’t let you down. We understand that bed bugs are a real nuisance and that you want them out of your house as quickly as possible so that you can get a good night’s rest.
