How to Get Rid of Roaches in Your Apartment

There’s nothing worse than rounding the corner in your apartment to find a big cockroach relaxing on your floor or wall. Not only are cockroaches dirty, but they also come in numbers, which means there might be more hiding just out of sight. Yikes!

In NYC especially, cockroaches can be a problem. Even if you’re clean and tidy, your neighbor’s messy apartment might attract those roaches to your space. But there are a few things that you can do on your own before you call local pest control services that’ll help you achieve a roach-free apartment once again.

1. Keep Food Away

Roaches, like all pests, need food to survive. So if you leave dirty dishes or unsealed food containers out in the open, you’re creating a great environment for cockroaches. Keep food tucked away in the refrigerator or pantry. After every meal, make sure you wipe down the counters and sink for crumbs, and then sweep the floors to ensure that every bit of food is out of the roaches’ reach.

This will prevent the roaches already in your apartment from breeding and new ones from entering entirely. If you stop the roach infestation right here, you might not even have to have local pest control services come to finish the job!

2. Seal Your Home

Roaches can’t get in to your apartment if you don’t give them an access point. Cockroaches may seem large when you come across them, but they can fit through cracks in your doorway, walls, and windows. You don’t want to find yourself calling 24-hour pest control in the middle of the night because a cockroach slipped through your bedroom window!

Any local pest control company will recommend that you seal any cracks with caulking compound. Use a stopper in your sink and bathtub drains when you’re not using them, and even sprinkle some boric acid down the pipes. Call a local pest control service to examine your apartment if you’re unsure that you’ve sealed every crevice–they will help you determine how much work needs to be done.

3. Use Boric Acid and Sugar

If the roaches have already entered your home and you don’t want to call a local pest control service just yet, try using boric acid and sugar. You can pick up powdered boric acid at a hardware store and use any sugar or powdered sugar you have in your pantry.

Mix three parts boric acid and one part sugar in a bowl and set down in any cockroach-heavy areas, like your kitchen. The sugar will lure the roaches toward the mixture while the acid will kill them.

Call a Local Pest Control Service for Cockroach Extermination

Although it may seem inconvenient, calling local pest control services to eliminate your cockroach problem might be the best way to get them out of your apartment for good. Then you can ensure that your apartment is free of cockroaches and other creepy-crawlies, allowing you to rest easy. Skilled Pest Control will arrive quickly and perform a thorough examination of your apartment, and then use our years of skills and experience to combat any cockroach problems that you have.
